Engaging and Graduating Hispanic Students Through Undergraduate Research

ENGAGE

The Engaging and Graduating Hispanic Students Through Undergraduate Research Program, or Engage for short, aims to provide broad access to undergraduate research for historically underserved students by creating a flexible model of engagement and through multiple touchpoints while also supporting student success. A specific focus of Engage is to engage and support students who are traditionally under-served in undergraduate research opportunities, such as first-generation, Pell-eligible, non-traditional, community college, and transfer students. This program is open to all undergraduate majors conducting research at Cal Poly ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ and funding is determined by the length and deliverables of your research project. Along with research opportunities, Engage offers students a structure of wrap-around support through faculty, staff, and peer mentoring.

Begin Your Research Here

This program allows students to participate in high-level faculty-mentored research projects over the course of the academic year. Students that participate in Engage will present their culminating research projects at our annual Cal Poly ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ RSCA.

Program Benefits

Faculty-Guided Research

Students will dedicate 5–8 hours per week to working on a research project under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Mentorship & Development

Participants will benefit from faculty mentorship, as well as access to skill-building workshops and career development opportunities.

Semesterly Stipend

Each student will receive $1,000 in stipends at the end of both the Fall and Spring semesters during the academic year.

ENGAGE Program Requirements

As an ENGAGE scholar, some of the requirements you would be expected to complete are:

  • Working on Research with your assigned Faculty Mentor.
  • Completing a Research Paper.
  • Attending Cohort Building Milestones.
  • Meeting with Peer Mentors and Advisors.
  • Presenting your research at the RSCA or other research conference.

Every year we recruit faculty members interested in supporting the undergraduate research mentorship under ENGAGE. Faculty participating in the program will develop a mentoring relationship with students, design and conduct a research project, participate in workshops and more.

Financial Aid

*The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships is responsible for coordinating student resources for the campus. Federal and state regulations require the coordination of all financial aid awards with all resources, including internal and outside (private) scholarships and grants, fellowships, stipends, fee waivers (including the Cal-Vet fee waiver), and vocational rehabilitation and other educational benefits. The total amount of assistance from all sources cannot exceed the Cal Poly ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ yearly Cost of Attendance (COA). In addition, almost all federal, state, and Cal Poly ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ grant programs require unmet financial need. All forms of financial aid, including outside scholarships, third-party payments, and tuition & fee waivers must be coordinated with a student’s aid package to ensure that these conditions are met.
