Nationally Recognized Scholar and Academic Leader

Dr. Mario Guerrero is a nationally recognized Mexican American political science scholar, Ford Foundation Fellow, RAND Faculty Leaders in Public Policy and Analysis Fellow, and recipient of the California State Student Association Faculty of the Year for Excellence Award. He has held numerous leadership roles at Cal Poly Ðǿմ«Ã½ and is currently serving in his seventh year as Chair of the Political Science Department. On campus, Dr. Guerrero has served on the Academic Senate Executive Committee, as Chair of the General Education Committee, Chair of the University Council of Chairs and Interim Faculty Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research. His leadership experience has also shaped broader interests in higher education, institutional governance, and pedagogy.

Dr. Guerrero teaches American politics, including courses in research methods, the presidency, Congress, and elections. His scholarship focuses on political behavior, new media, and the political implications of social networking platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and Twitter.

Dr. Guerrero previously served as President of the American Political Science Association’s Latino Caucus and as a member of the Western Political Science Association’s Executive Council. An award-winning teacher, advisor, and mentor, Dr. Guerrero’s work bridges scholarship, student success and faculty leadership in ways that reflect Cal Poly Ðǿմ«Ã½’s polytechnic mission.
