Lecturer Compensation
This page explains how lecturer compensation works at the Cal Poly Ðǿմ«Ã½, including salary ranges, how pay is determined, and how increases are applied. Lecturers (temporary faculty) are an essential part of the academic mission and are paid according to a standardized CSU salary schedule. Salary ranges, increases, and terms are governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the CSU and the California Faculty Association (CFA).
Lecturers are assigned to a salary range (Range A, B, C, or D) at the time of hire based on qualifications and experience.
Initial placement generally falls into either Lecturer A or B depending on qualifications, department equity, etc:
- Lecturer A (Grade 2): Master's degree in the discipline or equivalent educational experience.
- Lecturer B (Grade 3): Doctorate or equivalent educational experience.
- Lecturer C (Grade 4): Doctorate or equivalent educational experience plus at least five years of teaching experience.
- Lecturer D (Grade 5): Doctorate or equivalent educational experience plus at least ten years of teaching experience.
Advancement to a higher rank/grade normally follows the.
Salary ranges represent the full-time equivalent compensation for a 15 weighted teaching unit (WTU) semester and are paid in six monthly payments for an academic semester.
As of July 2024, the academic year lecturer salary ranges for full-time annual equivalents are approximately as follows:
: $5,507 to $6,677 per month
: $6,221 to $13,224 per month
: $6,825 to $14,523 per month
: $8,593 to $15,211 per month
As of July 2024, the 12-month lecturer salary ranges for full-time annual equivalents are approximately as follows:
: $6,288 to $7,658 per month
: $7,127to $15,211 per month
: $7,830 to $16,697 per month
: $9,883 to $17,490 per month
These dollar amounts represent the full-time monthly base rates. To calculate semester or part-time earnings, the base rate is prorated by the number of units assigned out of the 15 WTU full-time standard and then paid over six pay periods.
Lecturer compensation is based on the number of units (WTUs) assigned. The monthly salaries listed in the salary schedule represent full-time (15 WTU) assignments for the academic year. To calculate the salary for a specific assignment, the base rate is prorated by the assigned units divided by 15, and that amount is paid over six monthly pay periods for the semester. For example, a Lecturer is assigned 3 units at the minimum salary of $5,507 would have their pay calculated as follows:
$5,507 x 3/15 (3 units out of a possible 15 units total) = $1,101.40 per pay period, and $1,101.40 x 6 paychecks = $6,608.40 total for 3 units/semester.
