Academic Advising

Who should I contact?

There are three resources on campus for academic advising:

  1. The Bronco Advising Center is a campus-wide center where you can get help with academic records, financial aid, and student accounting.
  2. The CLASS Student Success Center is our college's advising center, which can help with questions about transfer credit, General Education requirements, and more.
  3. Faculty advisors in your major/option can help you plan your course of study, review your academic progress, plan future courses, and discuss your options for after graduation.

English (Applied Linguistics, Education, or Literary Studies) and Spanish majors can meet with any faculty advisor in the department who advises for their major/option. The Bronco Advising Center and CLASS Student Success Center are open during regular business hours, and you can see faculty advisors during their office hours or by appointment (see the link at right for advisor contact information and office hours).

It's a good idea to meet with your faculty advisor at least once a semester—and don't wait until your registration period opens to do so, because there will be a line out of your advisor's door. Before meeting with an advisor, you should do two things:

  • Check your  on your account, and try to take care of them.
  • Have at least your next year of classes tentatively planned out in your Academic Planner.

Degree Curriculum information

Your Degree Curriculum lists all of the requirements you must fulfill to graduate. Find your Degree Curriculum requirements in the , making sure that you're in the correct catalog year for your degree program.

Your major and the academic year you began the program determine which curriculum and milestones you should consult to plan your classes. For example, if you started the Spanish major in Spring 2025, you should use the degree curriculum and milestones in the 2024-25 row of the Spanish column. Note that your curriculum year does not change if you switch options within the English major.

Faculty Advisors

  • If you would like to learn more about satisfying your language requirement, the best faculty advisors to speak to are Dr. Olga Griswold, Dr. Alison Baker, and Dr. Kent Dickson.

Language Courses at Cal Poly Ðǿմ«Ã½

  • > English and Modern Languages > Display courses for this department.
  • It has to be a 2000-level language course (or higher).
  • It must be a language class teaching you to become a user of this language.
  • If you are not sure if you will survive in the 2000 level (=intermediate), please make an appointment with Dr. Amalia Llombart (allombart@cpp.edu). You can also take our optional ($10 to take it) to see if the intermediate level is right for you.
  • Here are some suggested courses:
    •  (we have not been able to offer this course for a while)

Language Courses at a Community College

  • If you have been a student at a community college, this might be a working option for you. If you are getting financial aid, you can talk to financial aid office to see how to distribute financial aid to the community college of your choice.
  • If you have never taken classes at a community college, you need to do all the paperwork to become a student there.
  • Community colleges have different numbering system compared to CSU. You need to make sure that the language course you will take is at the intermediate level (3rd semester of language).
  • Any foreign language will work as well as ASL.

CSU Fully Online/CourseMatch

  • Even though languages are best to be learned and practiced in-person, you can take online language classes through CSU Fully Online. However, the registration window for these is much later than our regular enrollment (see the ), which can increase your anxiety. Additionally, you have to meet the eligibility requirements and are limited to only one course per term.
  • The registration is fairly easy: "The enrollment process for CourseMatch is fully automated.  Students may enroll in CSU Fully Online courses through their student self-service portal - BroncoDirect (under your Student Center, click on "Enroll in CourseMatch").   A comprehensive list of CSU Fully Online courses is available by clicking the hyperlink: ."

  • CPP has a bit more information about CLEP closer to the end of this page: Ways to Earn School Credits.

Other Ways

  • Credit by Examination (has to be a course that is offered at CPP & needs to be arranged with that course's instructor at CPP; Dr. Dickson has more information)
  • Credit for Prior Learning (frequently used by former military, contact Veterans Resource Center)
  • There are no other ways that are streamlined. However, if you are academically proficient in another language (e.g., ASL, SEE, Japanese, Arabic), then you should speak to Dr. Olga Griswold, Dr. Alison Baker, or Dr. Kent Dickson to see if anything can be done.
