Ðǿմ«Ã½ to Become a RAMP Tutor/Peer Mentor
What do our Peer Mentors and Tutors do?
RAMP Tutors/Peer Mentors work with program participants to improve their reading and critical thinking skills and in becoming acclimated to the Cal Poly Ðǿմ«Ã½ campus. Tutors receive comprehensive training in reading theories, tutoring practices, working one-on-one with program participants, and being an effective peer mentor.
Qualifications
- Available to work a minimum of 8 hours per week
- CPP junior, senior, or graduate student in good academic standing
- Completion of introductory English course (A2) with a grade of "B" or higher
- Minimum 2.5 overall GPA; 3.0 or above preferred
- Knowledge of campus organizations, Canvas, and CPP Connect
- Tutoring experience and knowledge of reading theories and pedagogical strategies preferred
Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct 50-minute one-on-one sessions with participants to improve their comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking skills, and reading rate
- Facilitate small group peer mentoring sessions on topics relevant to helping students acclimate to college and CPP such as time management, networking, and graduate school preparation
- Provide campus referrals and informational support
- Complete accurate and timely documentation for each session
- Attend mandatory program events and training meetings (most occur during U-hour on Tuesday or Thursday, or Friday afternoons)
Application Process
Please note: the RAMP Tutor/Peer Mentor application is typically available during spring term only (around mid-March).
- Ðǿմ«Ã½ using online application. Search RAMP Tutor/Peer mentor and click the "Ðǿմ«Ã½" tab. Please attach a cover letter and current resume (include your GPA, class standing (junior, senior, grad student), expected term/year of graduation, employment history, and references in your resume).
- Select applicants will be invited to take the Nelson Denny Reading Assessment.
- After scoring at or above grade-level, you will be provided a link to request two faculty recommendations.
- Once we receive both recommendation forms, you will be invited to schedule an interview.
- Final selection is communicated by May 31st and training will occur in mid-August (the week before fall classes begin).
