The inaugural José A. Gómez College of Letters, Arts, and Social Sciences (CLASS) Staff Excellence Award honors a staff member who has made exceptional contributions to our college community and embodies the values of CLASS and CPP. Dr. Gómez established the fund to honor faculty and staff who have significantly contributed to student success in CLASS. A first-generation college student, Dr. Gómez grew up in La Puente before attending Cal Poly ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Sociology. During his time as a student, he served as president of Associated Students Inc. and chaired the 23-campus Cal State Student Association. Gómez later pursued master’s degrees in political science and public administration, as well as a Ph.D. in political science, all from USC. In 2019, Cal Poly ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½ honored him with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Through the CLASS Staff Excellence Award, Gómez seeks to give back to his alma mater and celebrate staff who embody the ideals and values of the California State University system. “It’s an honor to recognize those who continue to inspire today’s students,” said Dr. Gómez, now Superintendent/President of Pasadena City College.
Meet the 2025 José A. Gómez Staff Excellence Award Recipient
Stephanie Gonzalez joined CLASS in November 2021 and serves as the Administrative Support Coordinator for the Departments of Economics and Philosophy. Throughout her tenure, Stephanie has provided invaluable support to various departments within CLASS during critical periods, including orientation, staff transitions, and vacancies. Her dedication extends beyond daily responsibilities, as she actively participates in university-wide events such as Commencement, Fall Preview Day, and Spring Open House, helping to showcase CLASS and celebrate its students and programs. Prior to her time at Cal Poly ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½, she worked as an Office Manager at Westland Carpet One for nine years and spent three years at Azusa Pacific University in the Business Office. She holds an associate’s degree in mathematics from Citrus College.
Professor Sarah Krainin, Chair of Theatre and New Dance, highlights Stephanie’s professionalism and teamwork: “Stephanie is supportive and collaborative. She jumps in when others need a helping hand and keeps her cool while helping others navigate problems. Her service represents CLASS at its best and deeply supports our core mission to serve students.” New team members appreciate her willingness to share expertise and foster a supportive environment for learning. Her collaborative spirit and resourcefulness have been instrumental in helping colleagues adapt and succeed. Additionally, her strong work ethic positively impacts students, as she regularly offers guidance and creates an inviting space for them. Her exceptional organizational skills have significantly contributed to the success of events such as the Student-Alumni Networking Event, which saw record attendance and meaningful engagement between students, alumni, lecturers, and professors. Dr. Bruce Brown, Professor and Chair of Economics, describes her impact: “Stephanie’s genuine empathy, respect for others, and unwavering positive attitude make her an invaluable team member. She actively seeks to improve her knowledge of procedures and technology, builds strong connections, and readily shares her expertise. Her proactive approach ensures that challenges are met with effective solutions.” Stephanie’s commitment, professionalism, and ability to foster collaboration have made a lasting impact on CLASS.
