Philharmonic Orchestra & Opus Strings Ensemble Auditions

Overview

Auditions for the Cal Poly Ðǿմ«Ã½ Philharmonic Orchestra and Opus String Ensemble are open to qualified students interested in performing traditional and contemporary orchestral music.

Participation is by audition only, and students are expected to demonstrate strong musicianship, preparation, and commitment to ensemble excellence.

Philharmonic Audition Requirements


Audition requirements vary by instrument. Select your instrument below to see what is required of you. You should select repertoire that highlights tone quality, technique, musicality, and stylistic awareness.

  • 4-octave F and A flat major scales, and 4-octave E melodic minor scale
  • Any solo or etude in 3/4, 12/8, or 6/8 time that shows what you can do on the instrument

  • Scales and arpeggios
    • Concert E flat, G, A major in as many octaves as are appropriate for your instrument
    • Chromatic scale for full range.
  • A solo or etude that demonstrates what you can do on the instrument
  • An excerpt I will provide starting 8/14, before the auditionbe sure you email Dr. Riveire for your appointment so you can receive the excerpt!

  • Prepare a short etude for snare drum, and one for mallets (xylo) that will show me your level of ability.
  • There will be a sight-reading snare excerpt.

Opus String Ensemble Auditions

  • 1- or 2-octave scales in the keys listed above for your instrument
  • A solo or etude of your choice that demonstrates what you can do on the instrument
  • Excerpts are optional
